How to keep the fuel bills down and and the heat up.
It is really important now that Autumn is to about to turn into Winter and think about making your home as weatherproof as possible because it can get really cold over the next few months.
Heat loss is at it's greatest through your home's Windows and doors, but so can be your loft.
Not everyone lives in a house of course, you may be in a flat or apartment so you won't be responsible for the maintenance in your building. If you do and your loft isn't insulated, you are wasting huge amounts of heat which will effect your pocket through higher fuel bills.
It's estimated that up to 25% of your home's heat escapes through an uninsulated loft, so you need to think seriously about laying loft insulation, it can even keep your home cooler in the warmer weather. After all, we all have to think of the environment now, burning all this excess fuel has a knock on effect only our children will experience.
Like most things, there are different sorts of loft insulation, but one of the most common is rolls made from glass mineral wool fibres, I know it as Rock-wool but I think that is a trade name. These come compressed but fluff out once they are out of the packaging.
These rolls can easily be cut to size and should be laid underneath any floorboards you have down in the loft but over the joists, otherwise cold will escape through the joists to the rooms below.
New buildings have to have 250mm of insulation so aim for something similar for maximum benefit.
